How to Detox from the Dunya BEFORE Ramadan
Prepare Your Heart, Mind, and Intentions for Ramadan.

﷽
Ramadan is the month of spiritual clarity, but true clarity requires preparation. Just as we cleanse our homes and prepare meal plans before Ramadan, our hearts also need cleansing, and our ibadah also needs preparation.
Detoxing from the dunya before Ramadan ensures that when the month arrives, we enter with hearts that are light, intentions that are pure, and expectations that are solely from Allah ﷻ.
This detox isn’t about abandoning the dunya but creating a healthy relationship with it so that it serves our akhirah rather than distracting us from it.
The Ramadan Trap: Don’t Let the Hype Distract You
All of the Ramadan festivities and decorations often cloud our sincerity.
Many approach Ramadan as a month-long holiday rather than a divine opportunity. They plan elaborate iftars, spend excessively on Eid outfits, and engage in frequent social gatherings but neglect the true essence of the month: worship.
Fasting becomes about sharing that you’re fasting online instead of self-discipline.
Taraweeh becomes a routine rather than a sincere conversation with Allah ﷻ.
Eid becomes about celebrations and gifts rather than gratitude for spiritual renewal and eternal rewards.
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."
If we enter Ramadan with dunya-filled hearts, we risk turning it into just another event rather than a life-altering experience that strengthens our hope in the akhirah.
The Prophet ﷺ told us that we will get what we intend, and if our intention for Ramadan is to appear Muslim rather than truly embody Islam, that is exactly what we will receive from Allah ﷻ—a fleeting image instead of lasting reward. A sad exchange, given the immense blessings of this month.
So, instead of being consumed by the festivities, let’s prepare our hearts for Ramadan as the spiritual reset it’s meant to be.
Here’s how to start:
✅ Check your intentions. What truly drives your actions? Ensure that they are sincerely for Allah’s ﷻ pleasure.
✅ Celebrate efforts, not results. The efforts are yours, while the outcome belongs to Allah سبحانه وتعالى. He gave us control over the what (efforts) and the why (niyyah), but everything else—the who, when, where, and how—is determined by His infinite wisdom.
✅ Express gratitude. Recognize—both verbally and internally—that your ability to act and achieve comes from Allah ﷻ. Show gratitude physically by treating your blessings with care and intentionality.
✅ Repent for waste and arrogance. Acknowledge where you fall short and seek His forgiveness. This includes the wasting of time, energy, food, attention, and money—resources that could have been spent in more beneficial ways.
✅ Practice muraqabah. Live with increasing awareness and awe of your Lord. This requires reading the Quran and actively connecting His words and signs to your daily life.
✅ Think well of Allah ﷻ. As a Muslim, know that Allah ﷻ intends well for you. He provides, replaces, and sustains according to His perfect plan. Trust in His wisdom and mercy in all affairs. Pay close attention to where you may be loving Allah ﷻ conditionally and work to remove your conditions to truly feel love and contentment for whatever He’s planned for you.
The Three Ramadan Mindset Shifts
1. Give With Expectation From Allah ﷻ, Not People
Ramadan teaches us to place our expectations solely on Allah سبحانه وتعالى. We pray, give charity, and, most importantly, fast—not for recognition but for His pleasure alone. In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah ﷻ reminds us that fasting is an act done purely for Him:
"Allah said: Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting; it is for Me, and I will reward it accordingly."
The easiest way to manage expectations is to remove them from people. Our expectations often reveal our true intentions—if we do good in hopes of recognition, repayment, or validation from others, our sincerity is compromised.
"Do they possess the treasures of your Lord, the Most Mighty, the Great Bestower?"
Instead, purify your intentions by giving for Allah’s ﷻ pleasure alone.
When you give advice, don’t expect it to be followed. Expect Allah ﷻ to see you enjoining truth. Give support because you hope for Allah’s ﷻ support.
When you give money, don’t expect repayment or gratitude from them. Expect Allah’s ﷻ repayment and appreciation. Forgive debts whenever possible because you hope for Allah ﷻ to forgive your debts.
When you’ve been hurt, don’t expect them to apologize. Expect Allah ﷻ to give justice in due time. Forgive them because you hope for Allah’s ﷻ forgiveness.
When you post online, don’t expect validation from others. Expect Allah ﷻ to validate what you know through His signs. Give knowledge because you hope for Allah ﷻ to increase you in knowledge.
"And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'"
Do good unto people, expecting only from your Lord. The people we give to truly are only middlemen. Giving to them has little to do with them more often than not. Even though you’ve helped them in the dunya, they’ve helped you in the akhirah. What an exchange!
"If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you… And whatever you spend of good – it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged."

2. Do Not Take Credit for the Good You Receive
Every blessing you have—your wealth, time, ability to fast and pray—comes from Allah ﷻ. Ramadan helps us realize our dependence on Allah ﷻ.
"And whatever you have of favor—it is from Allah."
"So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it?"
This mindset fosters humility, protects against pride, and nurtures shukr. Enter Ramadan knowing that your ability to complete it successfully will be a barakah from Allah ﷻ, not a personal achievement.

3. Detach From the Dunya—It Was Never Yours
Ramadan teaches us restraint and detachment. From food, drink, and relationships—everything is paused to remind us that nothing in this dunya is truly ours and none of it is permanent. Detachment is freeing your heart from unhealthy dependence on what is temporary and fragile.
"Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is lasting."
True detachment means using the dunya wisely while remembering it is only a bridge to the akhirah.
Love without clinging.
Appreciate without being consumed.
Enjoy without losing sight of your eternal destination.
By realigning your heart with the akhirah, you can engage with the dunya intentionally—as a servant of Allah ﷻ, not a slave to your nafs al-ammarah.
Ramadan is more than an obligation.
It’s an opportunity to realign your heart with Allah ﷻ. By purifying your intentions, releasing expectations from others, and detaching your heart from temporary distractions, you create space for the true purpose of the blessed month of Ramadan: drawing closer to Allah ﷻ.
Detach from the dunya so your heart can truly attach to Him ﷻ.
🤲🏾 May this Ramadan be the one where your heart finds true contentment in Allah ﷻ alone.
🤲🏾 May this Ramadan be your best yet, in sha Allah.
Ameen.
As-salamu alaikum, until next time, in sha Allah
